- Break away from the Grid
Sites built on standard, 12-column, fixed width grid layouts are boring. Layered elements, text or vertical navigation, along with floating images and text compositions make the most of desktop space. Fluid design features like these have been gaining popularity on creative industry sites, and JTR expects to see the same applied to corporate websites this year.
- SVG Masking
Scalable vector graphics, or SVG, make it possible to apply a mask and to set a degree of transparency. This makes it easier for sites to produce more dynamic designs that make impressions on users. With SVG masking, JTR Solutions expects to see more texture and tactile details, like paint and ink textures, paper edges and hand-drawn elements, as well as subtle gradients. Each of these details add depth to would-be flat designs, so they’re sure to stand out.
- Multifaceted Content Cards & Meganavs
In the past it was typical to see an image slider (or carousel) at the top of a site’s homepage, but they couldn’t hold a user’s attention. For that reason, JTR Solutions recommends moving away from sliders. Enter: complex sets of content, like partially hidden or animated content cards and tiles. Not only are multifaceted content cards more visually appealing, they’re also more engaging. This causes users to click through and convert, rather than bouncing to your competitors’ sites. Some other changes include fewer top-level navigations. Instead, meganavs drop down to show subpages and featured content.
- Vertical-Split Layouts
With the passing of the slider, many sites have already begun using a split layout on their homepage. The vertical-split arrangement includes two sets of content which flank each other, and they often feature contrasting colors or images. As the homepage carousel becomes more and more obsolete, JTR anticipates more split layouts as we move into the new year.
- Short-Form vs. Long-Form
With the average user attention span estimated at eight seconds, sites need to deliver their point in as little time possible. Short-form content is easier on the eyes than long form and it doesn’t require a lot of processing, so sites can be sure their company’s message is received quickly and accurately. Plus, short-form content is more mobile-friendly, which makes load speed less of an issue.
- Ambient Video
Video emerged a few years ago, and the visual technique is only gaining traction in 2017. Ambient video is more attention-grabbing than a static image, and it’s better for storytelling because it gives websites a personal, human feel. Also, video engages users, so they spend more time on your site.
