Not All Secure Sockets Layers Are Created Equal
If you expect a top spot in Google’s search results, your business doesn’t have much choice but to convert from HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) to HTTPS (Secure). But with the various Secure Sockets Layers (SSL) certificates available, how do you know which is best for your business?
Secure Sockets Layers provide a secure connection for data transmission between a user’s URL and a company’s server. However, standard SSL are easy to acquire and so phishers use them to dupe users into transmitting sensitive information. Because of this, and the fact that it isn’t difficult to crack, a 1024bit root key is no longer safe enough. Whether your company relies on SSL for encryption or to establish legitimacy among users, it’s likely you’ll need additional verification. Besides, the major certification authorities (CA) and their partners no longer accept 1024bit root keys.
Extended Validation, or EV SSL, raises the security bar with a 2048bit SSL. An EV SSL checks the legal, physical and operational existence of an entity. It verifies the entity’s identity against licensing information and confirms ownership/exclusive rights to the specific domain mentioned in the application. An Extended Validation also checks that the certificate request has in fact been authorized by the entity.
What’s more, recent browsers immediately identify a website’s authenticity. A green icon is displayed, along with the site’s security status and the CA that provided the validation. An EV SSL is available for all types of businesses. This includes government entities and both incorporated and unincorporated businesses. EV certificates authenticate front-facing websites, and JTR Solutions recommends this SSL for sites with logins to assure a secure network. Plus, Extended Validation trust seals, like green-bar assurance and other display indicators, help reduce shopping cart abandonment. The trust seals impart credibility, enabling users to confidently transact with your site, thus driving sales.
Both the 2048bit SSL and the 4096bit SSL are impenetrable, but the longer root key standards won’t change as fast. This is ideal for SSLs expected to be in place longer than two years. If the standards do change, you can reissue your SSL based on the longer root key.
